“In 2011 I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Simultaneously, my amazing grandma AvaMaria, was losing her battle with Leukemia. BOTH of us moved in with my mother so that she could help care for the two of us at the same time,” says Lisamarie in a somber but inspiring voice. “My grandma taught me to sew when I was little so when we both became ill (living in the same household) I began sewing to pass the time and soothe anxiety and stress of going through chemo treatments and surgeries. I then realized how happy sewing made me and so I decided to try a craft fair at a small park. As customers came up to the booth and started smiling ear-to-ear playing with my toys I knew this wasn’t going to be just a hobby, it was going to be my business. And so Scatterbrain was born.”

Lisamarie’s beautiful story started with the emotional, therapeutic connection to sewing and, most importantly, to her grandma. Fast forward a couple of years to where she’s now. She’s cancer-free, living a healthy lifestyle, and loving her second chance at life to spread happiness with her work to children and adults around the world.

Lisamarie puts a heavy emphasis on her toys to provide sensory therapy through texture, color, weight, and heat to help others gain a therapeutic value like it did for her. Her “Octopals” come in fun versions of octopus-like stuffed animals, illustrated enameled pins, stationary, stickers and more, all handmade by Lisamarie.

“I will continue to design and develop new toys and ideas that will foster creative play with a nod of sensory to keep the snuggle game strong for years to come,” she promises.
